What is Cylinders Printing ?
This is a high-end process used for very long, high-quality print runs. It's known for its exceptional consistency and image density.
The "Plate"

Uses a hardened steel cylinder that is electroplated with a copper layer (which is engraved) and then a thin chrome layer for durability. The image consists of tiny cells etched into the cylinder's surface.
How it Works:

1. The entire cylinder rotates in an ink bath. 2. A doctor blade wipes the excess ink from the smooth, non-image surface. 3. The ink remaining in the cells is transferred directly to the substrate under high pressure.
Key Characteristics

· Exceptional Quality: Produces rich, consistent color and fine details with no variation from the start to the end of a run.
· High Speed & Long Runs: Extremely efficient for millions of impressions. The cylinders are very durable.

· Solvent-based Inks: Traditionally uses solvents, though water-based options are growing.

The Process Flow (Common to Both, with variations)

· The design is created and separated into the individual process colors (CMYK) and spot colors.
· Critical Step: The design is "adapted" for the specific printing process (trapping, color curves, etc.).
· A proof is created for customer approval.

· Gravure: The digital file drives a laser or diamond stylus to engrave the cells directly onto the copper-plated cylinder.

· Plates or cylinders are mounted onto the printing press.
· Ink is loaded into the stations.
· The substrate (web) is threaded through the press.

· A Stack-Type Gravure Press.
· The substrate passes through each printing unit, receiving one color at a time.
· Registration (color alignment) is constantly monitored by automated vision systems.

· After each color station, the ink is dried instantly using hot air (for solvent/water-based) or UV lamps (for UV-curable inks). This prevents smudging and allows for immediate application of the next layer.

· The printed web often goes directly into other in-line processes:
· Lamination: Bonding the printed film to another layer (e.g., aluminum foil or a sealant film) for barrier properties and structure.
· Coating: Applying a protective varnish or functional coating.
· Slitting/Rewinding: Cutting the wide printed web into smaller rolls for the final converting step (making bags/pouches).
